Science Communication Intern (Math)
The Science Communication Intern will work directly with the Professor for the Public Understanding of Science to help bring the College of Science’s departments to life on social media. Each department will hire its own intern, who will serve as a liaison between the department and the college, identifying stories and helping faculty and students share their work with broader audiences.
The primary focus of this role will be creating engaging LinkedIn content that highlights faculty and student research, awards, accomplishments, upcoming events, publications, discoveries, and other activities within the math department. The goal is to create posts that faculty and students can easily share through their own LinkedIn networks, helping amplify the visibility of the department and its people.
Responsibilities for the position:
-Serve as the primary social media liaison between your department and the college
-Identify compelling stories, achievements, and opportunities to highlight faculty and students
-Write and develop engaging LinkedIn posts featuring research, awards, publications, events, student accomplishments, and other departmental news
-Work with faculty, students, and staff to gather information, photos, videos, and other content
-Create additional social media content as needed, including short-form video, photos, interviews, and posts for other platforms
-Help ensure the department has a steady pipeline of timely and engaging content
-Ensure content is accurate, appropriate, and aligned with Notre Dame and College of Science communication guidelines
Qualifications
-Currently enrolled as a student at the University of Notre Dame
-Major in Mathematics
-Strong interest in science communication, social media, storytelling, or digital media
-Strong written and verbal communication skills
-Curious about the people and stories behind scientific research and excited to share them with broader audiences
-Familiarity with social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Instagram, or YouTube
-Experience creating social media content, including video, photography, graphics, or written content, is preferred but not required.
-Basic knowledge of video editing or graphic design software is a plus.
-Work will take place primarily in offices, laboratories, classrooms, studios, and event spaces across the University of Notre Dame campus.
-May occasionally need to carry and operate lightweight cameras, microphones, tripods, or other content-creation equipment.
-Work may occasionally take place outdoors and in a variety of campus environments.
